At the request of Governor Walker, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared agricultural disasters in Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Iron, Oneida and Vilas counties.
The declaration stems from several periods of bad weather. In December and January, a freeze-thaw cycle caused frost heave that damaged root systems and left winter crops exposed to extreme cold with no protective snow cover. A cold, wet spring and a 10-inch snowfall in April worsened conditions. U.W.
