Sheep, lamb inventory down 2% on year

According to the Ag Department, the U.S. sheep and lamb herd as of January 1 was 5.35 million head, down 2% from the start of 2011.
The breeding ewe inventory was 3% below a year ago at 3.98 million head with ewes one year of age and older decreasing 2% to 3.16 million head. Market sheep and lambs came out at 1.37 million head, 2% less than last year, with market lambs accounting for 94% of the total herd.

USDA reports soybean export sales for the week ending January 19 were lower than expected while corn, wheat, soybean meal, and soybean oil were within pre-report estimates. Sarah Burke, X-Games Champion Skier, Dead at 29

Sarah Burke, a four-time X-Games champion, has passed away from injuries sustained during a training run last week. She was 29.

Indiana FSA announces public meeting schedule

Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency Julia Wickard announced Indiana FSA has scheduled public meetings in the three counties offices that are proposed for consolidation in the Blueprint for Stronger Service plan that was announced by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack last week.

Record month and year for ethanol exports

U.S. ethanol exports hit a record 152.5 million gallons in November, the most ever in a month. Almost half of the ethanol went to Brazil; Mexico, Canada and the Netherlands are leading customers as well.
