Northern Wisconsin counties get disaster declaration
At the request of Governor Walker, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared agricultural disasters in Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Iron, Oneida and Vilas counties.
The declaration stems from several periods of bad weather. In December and January, a freeze-thaw cycle caused frost heave that damaged root systems and left winter crops exposed to extreme cold with no protective snow cover. Commercial red meat production during August was up 4% on the year at 4.303 billion pounds, according to USDA, with a record monthly high for pork.
Pork came out at 1.892 billion pounds, a 4% increase from August 2010, with the slaughter up 5% to 9.527 million head offsetting a one pound decline in the average live weight at 266 pounds.
Beef was reported at 2.387 billion pounds, 4% more than a year ago, with the kill 5% larger than last year at 3.097 million head and the average live weight
